Brain Disorders: A Major Global Health Challenge

1 billion people are living with brain disorders globally.
There is on average a life expectancy loss of 10 years.
8 million deaths are associated with disorders of the brain every year.
Today, more than 1 billion people worldwide are affected by conditions that harm the brain and nervous system. By 2050, the global burden of brain disorders is expected to reach 3 billion people. These include common problems like anxiety, movement disorders, sleep disorders and seizures, among others. People with serious brain disorders often die years earlier than those without these conditions, and millions of deaths each year are tied to brain-related diseases.
Brain conditions can lead to problems with memory, mood, decision‑making and personality, which can be very challenging at home and at work. The stress of providing daily care, managing unpredictable behavior, and coping with an uncertain future can be overwhelming for people affected and their loved ones, creating a powerful ripple effect across entire families and communities.
Progress in discovering new brain medicines has lagged behind other areas of medicine, leaving many patients and families feeling underserved and still living with major symptoms and side effects.
For too long, innovation in treatment has meant small improvements rather than true transformation. It’s time we start with the question that matters most: What do patients truly need?
Dr. George Garibaldi, Chief Medical Officer
Anxiety-related brain disorders such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are often managed with antidepressants and antipsychotics, frequently repurposed from other indications, that may fall short of patients’ expectations, leading many to discontinue treatment due to limited efficacy or burdensome side effects.
Patients deserve truly meaningful innovation that not only reduces their symptoms but also restores brain health and functional capacity, enabling them to fully participate in their personal and professional lives.
We at Synendos are taking a different approach by tackling the endocannabinoid system, the master regulator of brain function, and restoring optimal functioning of the brain.
